The only way prevent harm from tobacco smoke is for the smoker to quit smoking. The Oom Paul, Chimney, Pot, and Canadian (including all its sub-styles) all feature a Billiard shaped bowl, but are considered to be unique shapes by virtue of their respective variations. While originally a straight pipe, Billiard’s now come as 1/2 and 3/4 bent pipes as well. To no one’s surprise, the Billiard is offered in the widest range of colors and finishes possible, and virtually all pipe making entities produce their own versions of the world’s most popular pipe shape. Many Billiards break away from the rigid cylindrical shape, and feature bowls that curve very slightly inward at the rim and the heel. The bowl of a Billiard should also be canted forward ever so slightly (approximately 2°), which softens the overall appearance. Even to the untrained eye, it’s not too difficult to spot a Volcano in the crowd, since its inspiration is taken from an iconic earth shattering phenomenon. If it looks like a volcano, it’s probably a Volcano, but there are some basic guidelines to understanding the shape. First off, the grain orientation is very important with the Volcano shape. The pipe should display straight or flame grain radiating from the top and center of the bowl, and ideally an eye-catching exhibition of birdseye grain tobacco pipe on the bottom.
Large western-style tobacco pipes are used for strong-tasting, harsh tobaccos, the smoke from which is usually not inhaled. Smaller pipes such as the midwakh or kiseru are used to inhale milder tobaccos such as dokha and kizami or other substances such as cannabis and opium. With care, a briar pipe can last a very long time without burning out. However, due to aggressive (hot) smoking or imperfections in the wood, a hole can be burned in the tobacco chamber of the pipe. There are several methods used to help prevent a wood pipe from burning out. These generally involve coating the chamber with any of a variety of substances, or by gently smoking a new pipe to build up a cake (a mixture of ash, unburned tobacco, oils, sugars, and other residue) on the walls.
Then, the user releases the carb while inhaling to allow air to enter the stem and smoke to be pulled into the user’s mouth. Regular pipe smoking is known to carry serious health risks including increased danger of various forms of cancer as well as pulmonary and cardiovascular illnesses. If it is tobacco pipe smoked too quickly, it can produce excess moisture, causing a gurgling sound in the pipe and an uncomfortable sensation on the tongue (referred to as “pipe tongue”, or more commonly, “tongue bite”).
As with other members of the Canadian family of pipes, the length of the shank should be about twice the height of its Billiard shaped bowl. The Cherrywood is one of the few shapes that is always a “sitter,” having a flat bottom. Handmade Brandys typically display an even more voluptuous base which tapers more dramatically, on account of not being limited to the abilities of a machine to form their shape. Shanks are usually round, can be straight or slightly bent, and are usually fitted with a tapered stem, bent from 1/4 – 3/4. All in all the Brandy has a classic, sophisticated appearance with a wonderful feel in hand. The size of a pipe, particularly the bowl, depends largely on what is intended to be smoked in it.
One internet post said that pipe smoking declined as many pipe smokers were purchasing the wrong pipes; those that were cheap and were being filled with inferior tobacco. This shape may originally have been a popular choice for “basket” pipes made of cherry wood, which some say is the the origin of the name. Higher quality pipes are made in a labour-intensive hand shaping process.12 Traditionally, clay pipes are unglazed. Clays burn “hot” in comparison to other types of pipes, so they are often difficult for most pipe-smokers to use.
Adults exposed to secondhand smoke have increased risk of heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and reduced fertility. Pregnant women are especially susceptible to the harms of secondhand smoke, because it can cause pregnancy complications such as low birth weights and preterm birth. Many smokers make the majority of their pipe purchasing decisions based solely on aesthetics, which can lead to disappointment when the pipes in question finally arrive. The problem is, some pipes suit certain smoking styles better than others so buying on looks alone is something of a hit-and-miss affair.
But, as most of you realize, this was not yesterday, it was back in the day. Research also suggests that thirdhand smoke causes genetic damage that can increase the risk of developing cancer in the future.
